Summertime Conversations Series
A series of three summertime conversations series
was organized on Wednesdays, 17, 20 and 27 August 2003 during
lunch hours.
In the hour-long discussions, colleagues brainstormed and shared
ideas on teaching and learning issues. Topics covered included
¡¥making projects happen¡¦, ¡¥developing teaching portfolios¡¦ and
¡¥learning oriented assessment¡¦.
Sharing Experience in the New FE Framework
CeLTS and
CDSPFE jointly organised two experience sharing sessions regarding
the new Field Experience (FE) framework on 25 June
and 14 July 2003 respectively. Dr. Chan Kam Wing shared his findings
with participants on the value of tripartite conference and the
relationship between the three main parties involved in field
experience; Mr. Lo Yin Kue elaborated his experience of tripartite
conference in action; Dr. Sylvia Tang summarised student teachers¡¦
view on the new FE policy for participants¡¦ reference, and Mrs.
Jenny Tyrrell demonstrated with video clips how the piloted cluster
student placement enhanced the learning experience of student
teachers and strengthened partnership between HKIEd and schools.
The two sessions were attended by a total of 86 colleagues.

Four medical students from HKU
and four PESS students from HKIEd jointly demonstrated the
use of Problem-based Learning in a typical
class meeting to over 100 HKIEd students and staff, and over
10 principals and teachers from local schools on 13 June 2003.
Prof. Chin Ming Kai from the PESS Department demonstrated the
role of tutor in a PBL class. Prof. Phillip Beh from the Department
of Pathology of HKU briefed participants on the theoretical background
of PBL and provided valuable advice during the Q&A session.
Participants found that the demonstration helped them know more
about PBL in real-life operation.
Student
Conduct and Professional Suitability Workshop
A total of
18 teaching colleagues and student counsellors attended the Student
Conduct and Professional Suitability Workshop held on 21 May 2003.
Facilitated by Dr. Rita Chan, Head of CeLTS, and with reference
to 4 cases, participants discussed on how issues of student conduct
and professional behaviour could be incorporated into teaching.
Particular topics covered included plagiarism and appropriate
use of language. The discussion was very fruitful with valuable
experiences shared by the two commentators, Prof. Chan Wing Ming,
Dean of SLE, and Dr. Fok Shui Che, Senior Lecturer of EPA department.
They cited some real life problem situations which the participants
found intriguing and thought provoking.
Handouts on
the definition of plagiarism and examples of referencing for Chinese
academic papers were distributed in the workshop. Interested colleagues
may get copies from Ms Candice Cheung on extension 6708.

PBL Professional Development Series ¡V Workshop IV Assessing PBL
A
workshop on assessment and evaluation of PBL was jointly organised
by CeLTS and SCAST on 7 May 2003, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The
workshop was facilitated by Dr. Philip Beh of HKU and Dr. Rita
Chan of CeLTS. A total of 20 colleagues attended the workshop.

Professor
Lewis Elton, Professor of Higher Education at University College
London, visited the Institute from 15 to 19 March 2003. He met
with the President and many colleagues involved in assessment
projects, and provided a challenging and witty response as rapporteur
at the Learning-oriented Assessment Symposium. A highlight of
the visit was the lunchtime seminar on "Outcomes Assessment
and the Support of Good Learning and Good Management". Responding
to Professor Elliot Eisner's comment that "life is not a
multiple-choice test", Professor Elton argued for grading
only what can be assessed validly and reliably, and for using
portfolios to develop genuine profiling as an alternative to classifying
students by numbers. The seminar was attended by 21 colleagues
from various departments.

A
seminar and a workshop on "Improving Student Writing in English"
was organised by CeLTS on 24 February 2003 from 2:30 pm to 4:30
pm in B3-LP-04 and 7 March 2003 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm in B4-LP-07
respectively. The presenter was Mr Nigel Bruce, Principal Instructor
of English Centre, HKU.
In
the seminar, drawing on his research on undergraduate writing
and experience in teaching English for academic purposes to education
students, Mr Bruce highlighted writing difficulty exhibited by
Hong Kong undergraduates and areas to which teachers of writing,
or supervisors of non-language subject assignments could direct
more attention. In the workshop, participants reviewed examples
of a functional approach to essay writing and discuss means of
addressing students' writing problems through helping them to
discover the value of a functional rather than a formal-structural
approach to academic writing.

As a complement to the workshop and the on-site PBL class
observation organized during the first semester 2002-03, a PBL
trial session was jointly organized by SCAST and CeLTS on 21 February
2003, Friday form 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm at Room D2-G/F-05, Tai Po
Campus. A group of experienced PBL learners from the Faculty
of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong came to the IEd campus
to participate in PBL sessions employing cases written for education.
The trial session was facilitated by Dr. Philip Beh of HKU and
Dr. Rita Chan of CeLTS.

A
workshop on Voice Use in Teaching was organised by CeLTS on 6
December 2002. Dr Edwin Yiu and Ms Estella Ma of the Voice Clinic
of The University of Hong Kong gave a presentation on voice production
and shared specific tricks of voice use in lecturing. Participants
were given individual guidance on voice projection during the
practice session. A video recording the workshop is available
at CeLTS. Interested parties may borrow it from Ms Candice Cheung
at Extn 6708.

Implementing
MOI Policy - Supporting Learning in English and Learning of English:
An Online Learning Environment for Students and Online Instructional
Tool for Teachers
To
support the implementation of the Medium of Instruction (MOI)
policy, CeLTS invited Dr John Milton from the Hong Kong University
of Science and Technology to demonstrate to colleagues an online
course management system that can be used to deliver language
support to students. A total of 14 colleagues attended the session
held on 4 December 2002.

Tri-partite
conference has been established as an essential element in field
experience. It is a pre-or post-lesson conference in which a student
teacher, an Institute supervisor and a supporting teacher can
engage in a professional dialogue about practice. How to
facilitate such a meeting so that it benefits all parties?
What strategies can be used to encourage participants to reflect
deeply and critically on important issues of the observed lesson?
Two seminars on ¡§How to Facilitate a Tri-partite Conference¡¨ were
held on 5 November 2002 and 20 November 2002 respectively to address
the issues. A total of 18 colleagues attended the seminars.
Following
the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) class observation sessions held
on 20 September 2002, a workshop as an extension of the sit-in
PBL tutorial was held on 31 October 2002 from 2:30 pm to 4:30
pm at B2-LP-04 by SCAST and CeLTS.
A
series of four workshops jointly organised by CeLTS and Registry
was held on 25 September, 4, 8 and 18 October 2002 to familiarise
colleagues with the newly revised General Academic Policies and
Regulations. Some 80 teaching staff and non-academic staff attended
the workshops.
Participants
generally found the workshop stimulating and useful. They commented
most positively on the clarifications of the policies made by
the Registrar and the sharing during the case studies.
A video introducing the new policy can be found on http://www.ied.edu.hk/reg/
and MyIEd. More FAQs of the revised policies will be developed
by the Registry and made available on the Registry's web page
when ready.
An on-site observation of Problem-Based Learning was arranged
by SCAST and CeLTS on 20 September 2002. A group of 22 HKIEd
colleagues visited the Medical Faculty of the University of Hong
Kong. Colleagues observed how the approach of problem-based
learning was adopted in actual classroom teaching and learnt more
about the role of PBL facilitator.
An
orientation and induction programme organised by CeLTS was held
on 4 September 2002 for teaching staff who have recently joined
the Institute. Fifty-eight new lecturers, instructors and teaching
development consultants participated in the programme. Sharing
this happy occasion were 14 School Deans and Heads of Departments.
The President, three Vice-Presidents, the Deputy Centre Director
of CRIC and the Head of Student Affairs spoke on the Institute's
vision and mission, governance and administration, teaching, research,
quality assurance and student characteristics. Six current teaching
staff and students took part in a lively panel discussion on the
challenge of teaching and learning at the Institute. The discussion
ended on a musical note and the charming message "Children
are our future; teach them well and let them lead the way".
A
reception at the President's Lodge brought the programme to a
joyful close. Staff of the new HKIEd Primary School also attended
the reception.
Participants'
feedback on the programme was overwhelmingly positive. The sharing
by students is regarded to be particularly useful and meaningful.
CeLTS is grateful to Acting VP(AC) for his valuable advice on
the organisation of the programme.
(Note:
New colleagues who were not able to attend the programme are welcome
to contact CeLTS at 2948 6708 for a video recording of the programme
and the presentation handouts.)
