Training for DRC members
A training session for members of the
Departmental Review Committee (DRC) of the Academic Staff Performance
Appraisal Scheme was organised on 13 December 2004. The session was
facilitated by Dr.
Rita Chan,
Head
of CeLTS,
and attended
by 19 DRC members. 
Changing conceptions of self
assessment
Professor David Boud from University
of Technology Sydney presented a seminar on "Changing conceptions
of assessment" on 13 December
2004
to HKIEd
colleagues. The seminar located the recent research work in the context
of changing ideas about self assessment, explored the different conceptions
of self assessment that had been identified and discussed the implications
for higher education practice. The seminar was jointly organised
by LOAP and CeLTS.

Observation of teaching
forum
Contributors for the forum held on
17 November 2004 included:
- Prof Phil Moore, Acting VP(QAES),
who spoke on "Lectures and tutorials: an informal approach to peer
observation
(and learning)".
- Dr Tong Ho Kin, Head of Department
of Chinese, who spoke on "Peer observation in the Chinese Department:
enhancing teaching quality through peer observation".
- Mr Lee How Chung and colleagues from
the Department of Chinese. They shared their experience of peer observation
with participants.
- Prof Kerry Kennedy, Head of Department
of Curriculum and Instruction, who spoke on "What is worth observing?"
- Dr Li Wai Shing and Ms Yu Wai Ming,
Department of Curriculum and Instruction, who spoke on "Peer
coahing: a framework and key issues".
CeLTS-CDSPFE workshop
series on supervision CeLTS and CDSPFE jointly organised
a series of workshops on supervision. The workshops aimed to promote
mutual understanding among Academic and Professional Studies colleagues
of each other's expertise and perspectives in supervision, and to
promote partnership among these colleagues in enhancing student learning
in field experience. Each workshop focused on one subject area.
The focus for the workshop held on
12 November 2004 was Maths.
The focus for the workshop held on 8 December 2004
was English.
Peer observation
of teaching for the Department of Creative Arts
This workshop covered key concepts
and parctices in peer observation of teaching and introduced participants
to the CeLTS Pocket Guide to Peer Coaching.
The active classroom
revisited: incentives for and impediments ot active learning in higher
education The seminar held on 19 October
2004 was conducted by Dr. Tony Morrison, a senior staff developer
in the Faculty of Medicine Education Unit at the University of Auckland.
Dr. Morrison invited participants to 'revisit' a number of robust
techniques for engaging students in meaningful classroom activities.
The seminar also provided an opportunity for staff to share some
of their own successful tactics and discuss ways of responding to
common
difficulties
encountered in seeking students' active involvement in their learning.

Sharing by recipients of
the Distinguished Teacher Award & Certificates of Merit 2003-04
The recipients of the Distinguished
Teacher Award and Certificate of Merit 2003-04 gathered at Rm. D2-G-01
to share their teaching experience with fellow colleauges on 5 October
2004. The session was attended by over 20 colleagues.
It began with individual presentation by the four recipients
and followed by an open discussion. Participants
found that some of the teaching approaches adopted by the recipients
were very interesting and useful.

Orientation and induction
programme for new teaching staff (2004-05)
To familiarise new colleagues with
the teaching and learning environment at the Institute, CeLTS organized
an Orientation and Induction Programme for new teaching staff on
16 September 2004. The President, Vice-Presidents and the Head of
Student Affairs spoke on the Institute Governance and Administration,
Teaching and Research, Quality Assurance, and HKIEd students respectively.
A tea-reception was held in the evening at the Institute¡¦s Lodge.
All new colleagues had a chance to meet with the senior management,
Deans & Heads in a casual and relaxed environment.
